The BodyMind

Post  Gitte on Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:57 pm

Science now tells us that we are, in the very end, ENERGY. Both our thoughts and our bodies are energy. Actually everything is energy. Solid mass is energy in a form that appears physical to us (E=mc2). The molecules that build your arm´s muscles and bones consist of small bits of energy – or quantum. Energy is our real source substance. So if matter is energy and our mind is energy, then a quick logical conclusion would be that Mind = Matter.

Despite this fact we continue to approach and talk about these aspects of ourselves, our mind and our body, as two separated objects coming from different source substances. This is deeply grounded in our language and in our cultural belief system.

Actually, instead of talking about the mind and the body, we should start using the word BODYMIND, a term that was first proposed by Diane Connelly in 1986. This term reflects the understanding that the body is inseparable from the mind. The idea is that the mind and body are different aspects of one unified living human organism and that they interact to influence any expression of that human organism's life.

For sure our society would have to make a few system changes if we refused to separate our mind and body, and our mental and physical states. “My bodymind feels down today”, “I am going to take better care of my bodymind” or “The bodyminds of our employees are very important to our company” could soon be commonly used phrases.

But to really grasp this reality, this unity of body and mind, we need to experience it by ourselves. And the only way to experience this is to bring more of our awareness to our physical and mental aspects, combined, on a continuous basis.

In today´s mind focused society, the body is often neglected until it becomes a problem to us –when we get ill, feel unattractive or lacking energy. Neglecting one aspect of our self in search of a better state of being is like putting the newest software into the 1995 hardware, or buying the newest computer on the market and installing only antique programs. Just like computers, we as people will malfunction.

We need to keep in mind that we are a unit, and whatever we seek and wherever we are going we need to bring every aspect of us.
